Frequently Asked Questions

Effective February 24, 2020, the SKL legal and tax planning practice has changed its name to Polaris Tax Counsel. Who we are and what we do remains the same – only the name has changed. There are no changes to the SKL Tax accounting practice.

I’m an existing client of the SKL Tax legal practice. What does the name change mean for me?
The change will not impact the service you receive and you don’t need to do anything in particular. The people and our practice remain the same. We’ve just changed the name. All the existing SKL lawyers (Max Reed, Charmaine Ko, Katerina Lagassé, Dan Palmer) are part of the re-branded firm. Plus, we’ve added some fresh faces to help serve our clients better.

Why is the change being made?
We are changing the name of our practice for a number of reasons:

  • It allows us to more effectively communicate the work we do and how we serve our clients.
  • It better complies with legal marketing regulations.
  • It provides a platform for us to add a few new members to our team.

SKL Tax does my tax returns. Does this impact my tax returns at all?
No. The SKL Tax accounting practice remains the exact same as it is now.

Do I need a new engagement letter with Polaris Tax Counsel if I have one with SKL Tax?
No. The terms of your relationship with us remain exactly the same.

Why the name Polaris Tax Counsel?
Polaris, the north star, is renowned for its clarity and guidance. Our goal is to provide our clients the same clarity and guidance through the murky waters of cross-border tax law.

What does Polaris Tax Counsel do?
If there is a tax problem that spans the Canada-US border, we can help you with it.

How do I contact you going forward?
Our new email addresses and phone numbers are on our website (www.polaristax.com). Our existing SKL Tax email addresses and phone numbers will continue to work.
